Immigration and the Blessings of Liberty

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

Why have people traditionally wanted to immigrate to the USA? The common answer is in the form of one word: Freedom.

The Preamble to the United States Constitution indicates that the document was being drafted to secure individual freedoms within the context of a union of individual states cooperating as a federal republic. The overarching purpose of the U.S. Constitution is to “secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity.” “Securing” implies protection. The whole world knows that America is synonymous with protecting our freedoms.

What does freedom mean?

John Winthrop, a Puritan founder of Massachusetts, elegantly defined freedom in two parts – natural and civil.

    1. Natural freedom is the liberty to do whatever we please, whether it be good or evil. Winthrop described it as “incompatible and inconsistent with authority and cannot endure the least restraint of the most just authority.” He called it “the great enemy of truth and peace.

  • Civil freedom is “the proper end and object of authority and cannot subsist without it; and it is a liberty to that only which is good, just and honest.” Winthrop rightly also referred to civil freedom as “moral” or “covenant liberty.”

Civil freedom – or civil liberty, as it is now commonly called – includes the yielding of some of our natural freedom. More specifically, it is giving up our natural freedom to choose to do wrong in favor of submitting to the authority of the law. In this case, the authority is our U.S. Constitution.

U.S. immigration laws and regulations have been enacted and evolved in a way that supports our Constitution. A way that attempts to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.

Why are some potential immigrants banned?”

Many people wonder why, if we are “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” don’t we freely allow any who wants to come to America the freedom to do so.

The answer is that if we allowed everyone to come here, it would not be long before we begin losing our freedoms simply because those who immigrate – must understand the concept of civil freedom as opposed to natural freedom.

One of the most controversial issues of 2017 is the executive order to temporarily ban immigrants from specific countries. To understand the necessity for this ban, we must first understand that there is a silent war being waged against America. This silent jihad begins with “expanding the Muslin presence by birth rate, immigration, and refusal to assimilate.” (from “An Explanatory Memorandum: On the General Strategic Goal for the Group.” The group in this case being the Muslim Brotherhood of North America.)

The partial ban, as it is also called, has not been ordered because our president does not care about securing the blessings of liberty, but because he has pledged to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. It makes no sense, therefore, to continue to allow a group who value their natural freedom to select sharia law above civil law and impose it on others who enjoy the blessings of liberty afforded by our Constitution.

If we fail to understand what freedom means, how precious are the blessings of liberty, and the existential threat that exists for them, we cannot rightly understand the reality of our present situation.
