Will I be deported? That is a question that may be weighing heavy on the minds of more than 11 million people currently living in the U.S. without proper documentation.
It is no secret that the current administration has begun proceedings to deport undocumented aliens. As a matter of law, nothing of significance has changed. The change that affects undocumented immigrants is that this administration has chosen to enforce the laws already in existence. Generally speaking, all illegal immigrants are subject to deportation.
That is similar to being subject to being drafted into the military when the country institutes a draft. Just because a person is subject to the draft does not mean that he will be drafted. Ever. Given the current situation, being subject to deportation does not necessarily mean that a person actually will be deported. Ever. Here are three reasons why:
- Estimates of the cost of deporting an illegal immigrant range from $12,500 to $23,000 each. That would be a total cost of $138.75 trillion dollars ($12,500 x 11,100,000).
- The U.S. government’s focus is on deporting those
- “who have been convicted, charged, or even committed acts constituting any criminal offense
- who have engaged in fraud or willful misrepresentation in connection with any official or government matter
- who have abused any public benefits program or
- who otherwise, in the judgment of an immigration officer, pose a risk to public safety or national security
- The Department of Homeland Security has authorized immigration officials to employ prosecutorial discretion in the enforcement of deportation.
